Environmentally, it is better to rent, borrow or share large, expensive or infrequently used items rather than purchasing your own. Try these suggestions:

• Rent party decorations and supplies such as tables, chairs, centrepieces, linens, dishes and silverware.
  
• Rent or borrow tools such as ladders, chain-saws, floor buffers, rug cleaners and garden tillers.
  
• Before discarding old tools, camera equipment or other goods, ask friends, relatives, neighbours or non-profit groups if they can use them.
  
• Share newspapers and magazines. Bring them to work, offer them to your doctor's office or borrow them from the library.
  
• Take your leftover paint to the Paint Exchange at your paint care depot
  
• If you own any equipment others can borrow or rent from you, let them know.

Sometimes items need just a simple repair. Often repairing an item instead of purchasing a new one saves you money, as well as the cost of burying materials at the landfill and the environmental consequences of doing so.
