Reuse is not a new idea. In fact, it is as old as our civilization! During the American Revolution, a statue of King George III was recycled by Americans into bullets to fight the British. One hundred years ago, housewives looked forward to an annual visit from the itinerant scrap peddler who bought old pots and pans to make into a variety of items. During World War II, children were mobilized to carry out scrap drives, collecting everything from newspapers and tin cans to animal fat and metal foil to help North America's war effort. Though recognition of scrap metals as a national resource declined after WWII, many people have continued to use waste materials as a private resource. Almost everyone has something that they can't throw away, even though it's outlived its original usefulness. |
