Waste Reduction Week, October 17-23, 2011

What are you going to do for Waste Reduction Week?  What are the things that you do on a daily basis that create waste in your home or office?  Can you do something to change that?  It could be something simple.

Do you still get the plastic bags at the grocery store?  That is easy enough to modify.  What is keeping you from making the switch?  Is it the bacteria issue that was in the news?  That isn't really an issue. Reusable bags are washable.  Toss them in with the rest of your laundry and hang them to dry.

Do you have a car or trash can full of Timmy's cups?  There are some great travel mugs out there.  They don't spill and will keep your coffee hot longer.  This is another easy change that anyone can make.  What, you drink smoothies and iced capps?  There are reusable cups just for those too.

Does your garbage can fill up with egg shells and scraps from cooking every day?  Have you considered composting?  It can take care of your uncooked veggie parts, egg shells and the things you pulled out of the yard getting ready for winter.  Don't put it in a plastic bag and send it to the landfill.  Compost it in your backyard.

Other ideas are to buy from the bulk bins, buy in bulk, and choose items that are in less packaging.  pRRRdy says the first "R" is to rethink.  What other ideas can you think of?  Let us know what they are.

Participate in Waste Reduction Week, and you could make changes that may last a lifetime.
