April 1st, New By-laws

April 1st, New By-laws

Peace River Regional District has two new by-laws that go into effect on April 1, 2011.  These by-laws affect Solid Waste customers throughout the Peace Region.

By-Law No. 1927, 2011 - establishes regulations for the disposal of Solid Waste in the Peace River Regional District.

By-Law No. 1928, 2011 – imposes fees for the disposal of solid waste at Regional District Solid Waste facilities.

Both of these by-laws are available in full on the Peace River Regional District website and prrrdy.com under Landfill Info.

There are portions of these by-laws that we would like to highlight.  If you aren’t aware of some of the changes, it could cost you in additional fees.  One of these is the definition of an “unsecured load.”  This means a shipment of solid waste in or on a vehicle that is not covered with a tarp, inside an enclosed vehicle or otherwise secured or tied down by safety chains or other fastening devices in a manner that will prevent materials from leaking, spilling, escaping, falling from, falling through or being blown off or otherwise dislodged from or deposited outside the vehicle while the vehicles is in motion.  For purposes of this definition, solid waste contained in trash bags that are not covered with a tarp, inside an enclosed vehicle or otherwise secured down is an unsecured load.  If you arrive at a landfill or transfer site and you are deemed to have an “unsecured load”, you will be charged double the normal fee.

Another item to highlight is that loads containing greater than 25% commercially-generated corrugated cardboard will be charged at the commercial rate of $150.00 per tonne to dump.  This measure is an effort to encourage cardboard recycling.  The regional district is trying to do everything they can to get recyclables where they need to be and keep them out of our landfills.

Please take a look at these new by-laws and the information they contain.  When you are cleaning for spring, try to think of other ways to dispose of items you are clearing out.  If you would like other options, call us at 888-689-6328, or check prrrdy.com.
