In the world of Waste Reduction, we tend to place a lot of importance on Recycling. This is great, since recycling is one simple thing everyone can do to help reduce waste and protect the environment. It is important to remember, however, that "recycle" is the last of the 5 R's.

Consider your options!
Rethinking means stopping to think about all of the R's and to consider the true impact of your purchases or action--before you do them!
For example, imagine having to replace your carpet...what are your options?

For disposal...
Can someone else use all or parts of it?
Can it be recycled in any way?
How can it be disposed of safely and responibly?

For replacement...
Do you need to buy a brand new carpet? Can you buy an end-roll?
Can you buy a sustainable product? Check to see if your carpet is made out of recycled pop-bottles, or if it is made with Cradle-to-Cradle design.
Can you minimize waste? Consider purchasing flooring that comes in panels.

Always leave the house with a rethink attitude--arm yourself for the challenges and temptations you might face. Make yourself a checklist if it helps:
  • Shopping bag, in case you need to get something? Check!
  • Reusable mug, in case you get thirsty? Check!
  • Bike helmet or comfy shoes, because you're leaving the car at home? Check!
  • Re-think attitude? Check!
