New and improved-B.C.'s used oil recycling program is getting better and much easier to use. Beginning on July 22, 2003, the Used Oil Recycling Program will make it easier for you to conveniently recycle used oil, used oil filters and used plastic oil containers (30 litres or less in size). The Used Oil Recycling Program is an industry-led program and is based on the similar oil recycling program in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The program will be funded by Environmental Handling Charges (not a government tax) and managed by the British Columbia Used Oil Management Association. Just one litre of used oil can contaminate up to one million litres of fresh water. Used oil materials contain small quantities of substances that could contaminate air, soil and ground water. Plastic containers are not biodegradable and take up valuable landfill space. But, when collected, used oil, filters and plastic containers can be recycled and reprocessed into useful products instead of becoming an environmental threat. Used
oil recycling-it's easier, it's simple and it's
better for our environment! If you change your own oil be certain that you dispose of it properly by taking it to a collection location. If you take your car to an automotive service outlet you can be fairly certain that they recycle the oil that they change. But if youre not sure, ask!

Where can you take used oil, filters and containers? Cars are an indispensable fact of life for most of us. What we do with the used oil from our cars plays an important role in balancing our desire for convenient transportation with our desire for a clean and healthy environment today and for future generations.
