There are local recycling programs for automotive and rechargeable batteries.

There is not a program for dry cell (AA, AAA, C, D) batteries in Peace River Regional District at this time.

Automotive Batteries
In June, 1991, the BC Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks implemented the BC Used Lead-Acid Battery Collection Program, Transportation and Recycling Program.

Automotive recyclers, metal salvagers and battery repair shops will accept lead-acid batteries for recycling. Depending on the price of lead and other battery components, the shop may actually purchase the battery from you.

Regional landfills will accept batteries for a fee.

Rechargeable Batteries
The Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) can help you recycle your portable rechargeable batteries. These batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote control toys.

You can recycle

  • Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd)
  • Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH)
  • Lithium Ion (Li-ion) and
  • Small Sealed Lead (Pb)

at Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Radio Shack and Zellers.

Dry Cell Batteries

In some communities, small household batteries can be recycled. This program is not available in PRRD at this time.
