A great rule of thumb is: You can compost anything that was once growing in the ground. A couple additions to the rule are egg shells and dryer lint.

Meat, dairy, cooked food and anything with fats and oils in it should never be put in into a compost bin. All of these things may attract pests or produce foul odours.

Remember to add:

  • Fresh grass clippings
  • Plant trimmings
  • House plants
  • Manure
  • Kitchen scraps including: vegetable or fruit peels, coffee grounds, tea bags and crushed egg shells. Keep these in a sealed container in your kitchen until full.
  • Dry leaves
  • Straw

As a general rule, try to keep your compost pile two parts nitrogen--"green" (kitchen scraps and fresh grass clippings) to one part carbon-- "brown" (straw, leaves).

To speed up your composting process, chop all materials into small pieces. Mix the materials.
